It's funny how so many people where I'm from have never even heard of Angkor and Siem Reap, though it is now being hailed as "Egypt of the East." I can only imagine what the new breed of tourism will do to Siem Reap when that moniker becomes reality. When I was there a year ago, the tourist footprint on the community could already be seen. The necessity of billboards about how it's illegal to have sex with children was particularly disturbing.

A really great write up. Thanks for posting. From the sound of it, it was really crazy when you visited. My experience was a bit more tame, I suppose.

It is a difficult thing to manage, the tourism in Siem Reap, I mean. I just hope they take care of the temples so people can keep on visiting, and most importantly, also so they can keep on getting income from the tourists.

A great Cambodian phrase to memorize is " Knyom Ot Men Loi", which means "I have no money."

No one believes you, but it makes the moto-dops laugh.
