Pam, you're absolutely right. The "authenticity" of place is much harder to find, since we all have pre-conceived notions of what our destination should look like, based largely on tourist brochures and guidebooks.

It's true, the same notions can happen with our expectations of people. But I find if we're willing to listen to truly listen to others, often our perceptions are altered, and a personal type of authenticity is revealed.

Definitely a subject for a future post I think...

Authenticity isn't to be found in destinations anymore, I think. It's smaller and in the interactions you have with people while you travel.

Forgive my being self-referential, but I was in Vegas of all places, at a Greek restaurant and I asked the waiter, a charming gent who'd taken a liking to me, why one would leave the splendour of Greece for a pit like Vegas. He told me a story about the World War, the Civil War, his family... this sort of thing is authenticity. If you can find it in Vegas, you can find it ANYWHERE.

It's intention, not destination.

Blah blah blah. What a pretentious blowhard I am.
