Hi all -- thanks for your comments on the film. It was actually quite hard to put it together. Being in both places, it seemed almost obscene to try and photograph it. I always felt like a cold tourist, simply "using" the area as an emotional backdrop for my own vacation.

But then I remembered that the very reason the Cambodian government has preserved these places of horror, is so that others can visit and experience a small portion of what it must have been like to live through.

History is littered with examples of humanity losing its collective soul... the more that we remember these losses, the more we can safeguard against them happening in the future (or even at this very moment.)

And Dan, it will be difficult to visit, but I highly recommend you go. It's simply too important not to.

Cheers, Ian

Really makes me wonder if I could take my partner to Phnom Penh or myself for that matter. Somehow I still think I should go. Quite a moving video.

That's a great little video you've put together there -- nice work. I've been to Tuol Sleng many times and it's been fascinating seeing how the site affects others. On many occasions I've seen people crying uncontrollably in the "schoolyard" area, while others bundle out of the place with the cry of "Happy hour by the river starts in 10 minutes, let's get going" -- you'd scarcely think they'd been to the same place. It's a raw place that doesn't mess around trying to soften the punch -- essential viewing for any visitor to Cambodia. With the Killing Fields, it is worth noting that just about every sizeable Khmer town has one (or more) similar sites -- often not nearly as well-maintained as the one at Choeung Ek.

[...] The smart cookies over at Brave New Traveller have put together a good little video about both Choeung Ek and S21 that capture the two sites very nicely — well worth a look. [...]

You did a great job of writing about a difficult subject. I like how you ended with the story about the painter, easing that sick feeling you get when reading about horrible events. It really touched me, thank you.
