I'm planning this very thing in the fall of this year, and there's no way I can take everything I need for living in one place teaching ESL for a year, in a single bag. (I've got my heart set on no more than 2 though! 1 carry-on and 1 checked) I agree that traveling with one bag is the best option, and particularly when I am traveling in the US I only ever use a carry-on (besides, checked bag fees are ridiculous!) but also agree with Heather Carreiro that MOVING abroad with one bag is just impractical. There is a big problem having a carry-on luggage only though - you'll be left without your medicines, toiletries, tools etc. after you pass all those pesky airport security checks. Not when you need to pack textbooks, musical instruments, business wear etc. that you can't buy (or will be much more expensive) in your host country. Of course, when going on vacation, it's a HUGE relief to travel with one bag. It is so freeing not to be lugging the maximum amount of weight plus an electric bass guitar. As we speak I'm on the road and dragging around my bag is a pain.
