Yes, I agree, things do change. However, there seems to be one constant, the people of Mexico with their warm, inviting smiles and their proud heritage.

mmmm... I don't know. I don't like going to fast food places here at home, so I really don't want to see them when I travel.

When I travel, I want to see new places and trying different foods is part of the experience.

I like to eat all kinds of food, though. I suppose for people who don't like to eat different foods, the chain restaurants are a way for them to see new places, but still eat the food they like.

stacy -- i know, there's an odd sort of comfort in seeing American chains abroad. you know exactly what to expect, which is sort of anti-travel philosophy when you think about it. but then again, a small bit of certainty in a foreign land is generally welcome.

I read an article once, written by an expat in Rome who had lived there over 30 years. He talked about how it seemed like every 10 years, someone will tell him how awful Rome is compared to the last time they had visited. It was an interesting idea. When is the golden age of a place? People who go right now for the first time might love it, but hate it in 10 years. People who went 10 years ago and loved it, might hate it now.

I will go on record that I hate seeing American chain restaurants in other countries. I was horrified at all the McDonalds garbage we saw littering the Piazza San Marco in Venice. You are in ITALY and you are eating MCDONALDS?! Ug.

I have this same dilemma within myself... so much so that I was counting the number of fast food "chains" in China (Lots of KFC). There were non in Laos or Camobodia....but unfortunatly I'm sure thats only a matter of time.

Everything changes and nothing stands still.

On a completely different level... I remember visiting the Glastonbury festival in the UK 10 years ago. I went back four years later and it had completely changed, for some reason I was suprised that it had changed so much.

I guess it's progress of some sort :s

Hi Jenn - This topic is difficult for me too, since my instinct wants to immediately cast all the fast food joints and Wal-marts and box stores to the bowels of corporate limbo. But then again, it's also a stereotype to assume culture will always stay the same, or that there was ever an "original" culture to begin with. As Thai locals are fond of saying, "Same same, but different."

Well I definately missed your philosophical posts. That is the one thing about culture, it changes with the times, but the times are not necessarily the best things to change with, ya know?
