Ancient healing tradition or pure old-fashioned quackery? You decide.

His name was Pablo Falcon, a Native American healer living in New Mexico. He was on a show called Human Urine-Elixir for Good Health? airing on the National Geographic Channel, showcasing an ancient healing tradition: the practice of drinking one’s own urine.

Yes, he drank his own urine; a cup a day, usually in the morning, catching the first stream in mid discharge.

He drank it straight, like a shot of whiskey, but sometimes sipped it like a hot toddy on a cold moonless night. It was Pablo Falcon’s preventative medicine-urine therapy, or uropathy.

I was young. That’s disgusting, I thought. Years later, I re-discovered Pablo’s delinquency, but until then I remained ignorant of my body’s golden elixir as though it was an enigma, hidden from the alchemy of health within a toxic world.

To others it’s tradition, but among a modernizing world tradition is perceived as primitive.

At The Mercy Of Sickness

Out in the world, I forgot about Pablo. I forgot about the ways of the warrior, the ways of the body, and its own powerful remedies.

I forgot about these things because I was falling apart. I was in India, and my body was aching, my head spinning, my nose divulging a sinewy greenness, my intestines constricting, my sphincter bleeding.

But I did not forget about Gandhi.

I was participating in the 75th anniversary of Mohandas K. Gandhi’s Salt March, and here I was falling apart, literally bleeding out of multiple orifices.

And what could I do? Whine? Complain? Go to a hospital because I wasn’t feeling well? The Peace Walk wasn’t about me, or about any of the other walkers from nine different nations. The Peace Walk was for those of India, and a universal Peace for Mother Earth and Her inhabitants.

A young Japanese living in Nepal came up to me. He was Morita and he saw through to my pain. The man I hardly knew handed me a plastic cup as we took lunch. “Take this,” he said in a hush. Around us others slept. “Go pee, and drink as much of it as you can.”

I was stunned. I had forgotten Pablo Falcon. I had forgotten my own body and its power. At that time, I was only cursing it. “What?”

“You want to get better?” Morita asked.
I nodded.

“Then pee and drink.”

The First World Conference

In 1996, a group of urine therapists put on the First World Conference of Urine Therapy.

Held in India, the conference on the art of drinking urine brought together doctors, scientists, practitioners and believers into one room to exalt the benefits, seek out the contradictions, and bring awareness, drive and inspiration to a deepened scientific study of this clandestine cure.

They read testimonials of miraculous recoveries. They reviewed the studies of urine and its components. They compared their own experiences, treatments and applications. They found no contradictions.

Found in the ancient Vedic culture of Hinduism, urine therapy holds another name, Shivambu Kalpa Vidhi, or The Waters of Shiva. In the five thousand year-old Damar Tantra text, the writings recall Shiva as he unleashes his secrets of a healthy mind, body and soul to his wife, Parvati.

The text, or sutra, is one of the oldest known documents on healing, one that directly encompasses one’s own body-the ailment and the cure as one. It claims no association with external remedies, but solely describes the power and wisdom of the body under healthy eating habits.

It was Mahatma Gandhi who spoke:

The human body is the best portrayal of the universe in miniature. Whatever does not exist in the human body cannot be found in the universe, and whatever exists in the universe can be found in the human body.

Not only does the Vedic culture find complete truth within one’s own being, but ancient medical scriptures of the Egyptians, Chinese, Aztecs and Christians hint at this secret. In Proverbs 5:15 of the Old Testament, it is He who lets it be known: Drink water from thy own cistern, and the streams of thy own well.

The Workings Of The Body

human urineWhat comes to mind is shit and piss, two ways of excreting toxins from the body.

The former-yes.
The latter-no.

When it comes to the process of making urine, there is one large misunderstood nomenclature: Urine is dirty. It picks up all your body’s dirty liquids and whizzes them into a smelly bowl. It’s crap. But what you forgot about is this baroque process.

We eat. We drink. We ingest and we digest. Solid matter is sent into the stomach, churned, macerated and spit out from the intestinal tracks after absorbing the good, the bad and the ugly. With liquids, most, if not all, are absorbed into the bloodstream.

From there they flow around, swimming like Chinese fighting fish. Through the limbs, the core, from the spine into the skull, within the tongue and around-the substances of our blood are everywhere before entering its first cleansing phase. This would be the liver.

With health, all things operate accordingly; on time, in rhythm. As the blood enters the liver it becomes the stone within the refinery. The liver is the detoxifier of our blood, removing poisonous products, secreting them or storing waste in the gall bladder, which ends up as bile.

From here, the blood flows to the kidneys. Coen van der Kroon, in his urine therapy guide Golden Fountain, describes how “they remove all superfluous vital substances from the blood, and filter out a surplus of water.”

These leftovers are the diamonds emerging from the refinement. They are the matter that form urine-simply the leftovers from the body’s water and nutrients. And a healthy diet is key.

A Cure For Life’s Ills?

Despite varying ranges of lifestyles, urine at best is an elixir; it is the water of life.

In J.W. Armstrong’s The Water of Life, homeopath and naturopath Ellis Barker quotes that “our body distills the most wonderful medicines and provides the most perfect serums and antibodies.” In fact, the list of vitamins, minerals, enzymes, amino acids and hormones runs long.

One of these powerful byproducts is urea; an organic compound of carbamide containing carbon, nitrogen, oxygen and hydrogen.

With this knowledge, pharmaceuticals have discreetly capitalized on urine’s power, incorporating urine in anti-cancer prescriptions as well as blood-clot dissolvers, ointments, hand creams, lotions and soaps.

Your very own urine is known to have a significant effect on the following diseases:

Adrenal failure, AIDS/HIV, allergies, cancer, candida, colds & flu symptoms, colitis, dandruff, diabetes, diarrhea, ear & eye troubles, eczema, gangrene, gout, heart disease, hepatitis, herpes, hyperactivity, jaundice, lupus, mononucleosis, multiple sclerosis, pancreatic insufficiency, psoriasis, rashes, rheumatism, rheumatoid arthritis, sciatica, warts and more.

Research remains limited, and the guesses as to why are as many as urine’s benefits. If humankind began sipping, fasting, massaging, gargling, douching, eye and ear-dropping, sniffing, injecting, compressing, rubbing, bathing, shampooing and giving oneself an enema all with one’s own urine, doctors would become unneccesary.

The pharmaceutical industry would collapse. Chemicals would be cleansed from peoples’ bodies. Man & woman would be healthy, strong and immune. And the billions of dollars going toward the chemical-dependent world could be spent on more worthwhile causes – like education.

A holy temple. An elixir. The cause and effect in one. The ailment and medicament together.

Your body’s urine is anything but wasteful. It is the gift, sanctified through the internal processes and given to you once more for complete health, detoxification and rejuvenation.

Urine therapy walks like a duck and quacks like a duck. Quackery. Have a read at Why Bogus Therapies Often Seem to Work (http://www.quackwatch.com/01QuackeryRelatedTopics/altbelief.html) and reevaluate the power of your piss.

Without research from refereed journals (and this is excluding the obvious and improper use of Wikipedia – see ‘urea’) this article holds no water. But even beyond this glaring problem, some basic biology is just as sufficient to debunk the argument. Urine is in fact a way in which the body excretes toxins. In particular, hydrophilic compounds that the liver cannot remove.

This barrage may come off as harsh, and I don’t expect people to be self-prescribing from what amounts to an opinion piece, but claims without references just propagate myths.

I agree with many of these comments. I find it bizarre that throughout my research I found no scientific proof, and hence, found a more intriguing reason as to why this article should be written (based on experience and opinion – as well as published research) and put out there.
In fact, what inspired me to dig into my memory and expand from there was the show Man vs. Wild.
While in the Kenya, having parachuted into the gresslands, Bear Grylis was in need of water. He took his risks, went back to his training which no other citizen could receive unless by a professional, and squeezed a pile of elephant shit over his head, draining the liquid into his mouth (and all over his face)… The man obviously survived and continues to do so… And heresy propounded, when on the road traveling and in risk of death, one might remember the myth passed down from elders through generations’ word of mouth. But it’s up to the believer on what to believe.

Health benefits aside: there is an undoubted presence of social conditioning affecting our views of bodily fluids. To me, that’s almost the most interesting observation. Why does the thought of drinking urine produce an immediate reaction of disgust?

As true as that might be,

I’m not drinking urine. Not with the ‘piss in the cup and reingest it’ method in any case.

If it changed colour and flavour, I’d be all for it. Call it Excre-Ade and make a drink out of it.

Besides that it seems to relieve stress. I assume because of the melatonin?

    GREAT information!
You know what I have tried it and when you understand the process it make sense.

I am a vegetarian and when you think of it people eat DEAD animals which it is even more disgusting then drinking your own pee if you ask me.
AND when you know that some people out there are thinking about profits first and not your health, it makes you wonder.

Take your health in your own “hands” and pee in that cup…you ll be glad you did!
    Thx!

I can understand the need for those who are desperate to find a cure to a terminal or chronic illness…

I also believe that the pharmaceutical companies do care only about the bottom line…

However, I’ve been looking for a while now for real solid clinical evidence (the raw data if possible) to confirm or dispute this alternative therapy since a good friend of mine tried it…and I’ve been thus unsuccessful…

If anyone out there has a reference for a peer reviewed journal dealing with the benefits of urine therapy based on an actual study and not anecdotal information, please send to: pshollett@hotmail.com

The only way I’d drink my own urine is if I was stranded without water…since urine is 95% water it can help sustain you, and has saved lives for those unfortunate enough to be forced to drink their own urine to survive….as for a cure for cancer (or other diseases)? I’d like to see the evidence.

Everyone sniggered and laughed when I brought up the issue of Urine therapy. No one including me tried anything. A couple of years later my elderly mother started having problems with her hands and found it increasingly difficult to open the fingers. She was told that it was arthritis and it hasn’t got a cure. She did try a lot of medication with no improvement. Then very reluctantly ( without telling anyone – including me ) she tried urine therapy including pouring the urine over the palm and fingers. Today her hands are fine . No sign of the old problem. I must andmit that a few times over the last couple of years I noticed that her fingers were quite normal and wanted to ask her how it had recovered so completely. Then I thought my memory was playing tricks.
I found out only a few days ago when she said that others ougth to know and so she decided to tell me. So here it is for what it’s worth . For troubled people use it if you you want to get help from nature which always knows best. Otherwise just discard it and continue as you were. Thank God for Nature !

Ok I confess, I started doing it because I am overweight and I am at my wits end. This is first week and I must admit to feeling a bit more energy and my skin does appear to be somewhat softer. I am trying to switch from eating a lot of meat because I am a great lover and devourer of meat and fast foods. Now I eat so much green stuff even though it is on my last nerve.

I plan to stick with it because after all I already drank it so it cannot get worse if I continue. I hopefully will be able to say more about how this works.

I started out by first smelling it and contrary to what I thought it does not smell bad and it really does not taste awful as I would have thought. I did gag on it a couple of times tho but it was just from the thought of what I was actually doing.

Anyway I am in for a penny so I might as well jump in for the whole pound while I am at it and stick to it.

Im not sure if i would go as far as drinking urine. I guess the thought of it tasting awful is a definate turn off. However, I must admit that I remember my aunt pooring a few drops of urine in our ear when we were sick and had ear aches. I confess that i remember It working miracles. It wasnt till a few years ago that I dared to try it myself. My 4 year old nephew was over and woke up in the middle of the night criying and in pain. After attempting to put him to sleep, no way of reaching my sister and not being able to leave the house( sitting another 4 kids) I dared to do the urine method i remembered as a kid. I had him pee in a cup and poored a bit in his ear. I swear he whined for about another 10 minutes and then was out like a light. He spent another 2 days with me and never once complained of the ear ache again. I was a bit afraid in trying it but it worked!

i am not an advocate, but i wouldn't hide the FACT .,…instead of badmouthing give it a trial then u can blab if it doesn't.
though with disgust i drank urine every morning for 3 weeks and cleaned my face with it using a cotton ball…now my face is smooth, supple and the spots and discoloration have cleared out….IT IS WONDERFUL.

Yes, it does work! I’ve been doing with for a few weeks now, ad I have alot less stress. My ears and eyes are better. And my hair feels better….much softer than before. I drink a cup every morning, wash my hair with it. With this bad economy (in the USA at least) I cannot afford doctors & expensive medicines. And yes, they DO put urine n many products, like soaps, pills, etc….I recall a guy on the radio, Gary Null, talk about this back in 1994, on his show “Natural Living.” He didn’t speak for or against it….he just let the listeners know that UT exists; and I never forgot it. Good luck to you all.

OK – I’m gonna weigh in here – to all you nay-sayers. I was recently hospitalised with cellulitis November 29th, 2009 and met a naturopath in the opposite bed, whilst in hospital. I had read a little about those who did this, including Gandhi and thought “Ok, but maybe not for me”. The lady’s husband brought in Martha M. Wright’s book “Your Own Perfect Medicine” for me to read.

I decided to try it to aid the healing of my foot and bathed my foot in it several times per day. started drinking it with a medicine measure (30-40 mls) on 2nd December. I devoured about 3/4 of the book before we were both discharged and searched it out on the Internet.

My colon (severely blocked and causing bloating due to Diabetes) started to unblock. I have lost almost 10kgs in 3 weeks, and the most amazing and unexpected thing has happened. All over my arms for years, I have had what I described as “lizard skin” – just a sort of “constantly peeling” look which no matter how much I emery-papered and applied moisturisers to, returned as soon as the moisturiser wore off – well, it’s totally gone!!! that was after the first NINE days!

On the back of both hands I had small flattish wart-like lumps which I used to scratch off periodically, but they always grew back (they are TOTALLY GONE too!) and I am sleeping like a baby!!

Am I a convert? YOU bet your life! – my skin looks like it did when I was 30 (and I am 57 years old!!!!!) I feel like writing a book about this and would love to lecture on the subject, as I am able to convince more and more people to try it and relate their success stories – read some more is my advice, don’t just go “Ugh!” like most uninformed “:chicken s–t” people
    Regards and best of health!

I heard about U.T a week or so ago. Went fully into the practice, drank practically every bit of urine I produced (following the mid-stream guide). First two times experienced mild stomach upset but that never happens now. Have not noticed any bad side-effects whatsoever so am going to continue with the practice for several months at least. I enjoy breaking the social taboo of drinking one’s own urine. I don’t find it disgusting at all, in fact I quite enjoy it at times. I keep a cup in the bathroom to use each time. I am hesitant to make broad claims about its effectiveness just yet but I have been feeling quite healthy. Yesterday I went for a 7+ mile bike ride in the very cold weather (snowed previous day, temperature around 40) and usually this tires me out significantly and leaves me with the symptoms of a slight cold for a day or so. I returned home, had a warm cup of tea, and felt just as well as before I had even gone out! Urine therapy has given me a new confidence with my health. I expect that, unless any negative side-effects reveal themselves after a month or so of treatment, I will be able to live free of the concerns about catching minor colds and such or at least enjoy a very quick recovery. One theory I have seen is that by re-ingesting one’s urine, the immune system is strengthened significantly. Thus it would seem that a daily practice of re-ingesting one’s urine acts as a regulated medicine to keep the body system healthy. Perhaps this explains why, after drinking my urine, for about 15-30minutes my body feels energized in a way that I have never experienced even with healthy vitamin rich juices and such. Something worth considering. For me, I will keep doing it until I notice a bad side-effect, and if there are none, I see no reason not to continue.
