Ian, something I've wondered since I laid the foundation of my impressive stack of rejection slips from various & sundry Sci-Fi publications: Is it ever possible (or advisable,) to write back to the editor and request the lowdown on why the piece failed and how it might be improved? I suspect the additional mail will just annoy an editor who's already got piles on his plate and he's never going to remember a rejected submission anyway, but...is there ever an avenue for this?

Ian - you missed the boat on Sue's call about “At the very list, you’ll get their attention.” Spell check wouldn't pick that up because there is no spelling error. So, technically, you did nothing wrong from a speller's point of view. Now, if you had said make sure you have no grammatical errors...

Ian, When you mentioned that "nirvanic moment", I had an instant involuntary convulsion and a tear welled up...that is utterly my life. 7 years of trying to 'be' a travel writer and I still can't get the hang of it. I wish I could move on and decide it wasn't for me, but alas, I know I am a brilliant writer!

LOL... that's not what I said at all. I said everyone makes mistakes. Meaning I don't see why a couple of typos in an article necessarily mean the facts are all wrong.

I wonder if National Geographic Traveler would really throw out a pitch or submission just for typos, or if that's just something we little people tell each other?

sue - good eye. you're right, i should hold myself to the same standards. then again, a blog entry isn't quite the same as an article pitch; and as a blog writer juggling multiple jobs, I can't always spend the time on spelling checking that I should.

"After all, if you can’t spellcheck your own pitch, how accurate are the details in your travel article?"

"At the very list, you’ll get their attention."

Oh, come now. At the very list I would think you'd mention that everyone makes mistakes at times.
