Bobby,

I found this link for you:

http://www.globalaccessnews.com/

If I'd stopped doing what I wanted when I broke my back, I never would have gone abroad. It's perfectly realistic, and don't let anyone tell you otherwise - especially yourself. You can do more than dream it, bru.

I've always wanted to travel to foreign countries but now that I'm in a wheelchair it's kind of out of the question. I don't think it would be realistic to try and go backpacking in a wheelchair. But I can still dream!

Nicely said guys! All the 'truths' reminded me of past trips. My husband and I are T-10 days and we couldn't be more excited!! We met in Kenya 2 years ago, traveled for 4 months together throughout East/South Africa. The adventure was life-changing (to say the least). We are about to go on our next adventure, we start in Bangkok! Alie hobosinlove.com

Please allow me to add to your 5 ugly truths of budget travel...

1. You can learn exciting new cultures
Absolutely! In the Amazon rainforest, if you play your cards right, you can buy a chicken from a rubber tapper - and chase it around the field before you catch, kill and cook it. You can also learn to catch a caiman if chasing the chicken is too tame. Or, you can learn to bathe and wash your hair with one hand while the other is holding up your culturally appropriate sarong. If done wrong, this can be very exciting.

2. It's cheap
It certainly is! Bus stations cost nothing to sleep in - the trick is to lock your backpack to yourself and yourself to something that can't be moved - usually a bus or the station itself.

3. Try exotic foods
Oh yes - crunchy deep fried grasshoppers really DO taste like nuts! It's the texture that's a bit different... and there's nothing like a foodseller on the roadside, holding up a carcass of roadkill, calling: bushmeat, delicious for you!

4. You can see new things
Watching geckos at night and betting on whether those suction cups will work through the night. Meter-long fluorescent lizards in West Africa. Hunters skinning and carving a rhinoceros.

5. It makes you a better person
Most certainly. I am much more fatalistic for my travels. I am now able to face abject fear while giggling. Armed soldiers riding off with my passport have this effect on me. So does getting lost in a minefield. On minibuses, I sit on the front seat - the death seat - and put my backpack on my lap so it blocks my view. This way, I won't see the end coming.

Yes, I am unapologetic - I love to travel and I wouldn't dream of doing it any other way.

Backpacking is tough, I agree. I remember my first vagabond trip to Mexico. I at least spoke the language and had an idea of some places I wanted to visit but the rest was day to day living. I never got sick, but I barely slept, got robbed once and was so filthy towards the end that I fell into a temporary deep depression and just wanted out of there, but after finding a place to bathe I got my wits together and finished the trip in a very positive mind frame. This trip was 8 years ago and it stands out as a pivotal moment in my life and I long for another trip like it. Such travel builds character, self-confidence and a great appreciation for our many blessings in this country. After this trip I was so on fire I came home and was more productive and clearer than ever in life.
