monk-megaphoneI’m sure many of you know about the current uprisings in Burma.

Reports are now pouring in that the military regime has begun killing the peaceful protesters, much as they did in the previous protests almost 20 years ago.

Many of us have never experienced life under a brutal dictatorship, and hopefully none of us ever will. Therefore it is our moral obligation to support the Burmese people as they reach out to us, and force as many eyeballs as possible to watch what happens next.

From the USA Campaign for Burma:

The military is now utilizing violence against monks and other non-violent protestors. They have beaten and arrested hundreds of people, and it is reported that more than a hundred have been killed. We are tired of the international communities just making statements – they must ACT

Thanks for bringing this up on the site, Ian. The past few days, a lot of photos, reports, and videos from the demonstrations have made it onto the internet via blogs, YouTube, as well as BBC et al. Sure, the Burmese gov’t is trying to shut this down, but it already seems that there is more international attention focused on Myanmar now than ever before. In that sense, the demonstrations were/are a success. I just hope violence won’t escalate the way they did in 1988.

    Thanks for this, Ian.

If anyone happens to have any strings to pull in the Chinese or Japanese governments, please do so – I don’t know who else besides their few remaining trading partners the generals might possibly listen to.

It really is a very helpless feeling watching this all unfold and seeing the military firing on unarmed civilians. I’ve been amazed each day at the bravery of the citizens of Burma and hope their efforts and those of the leaders of the world are enough to topple the regime.
