I'm living in London for the last 3 years as a student and I it is not all pain and horror. Living in London can be really expensive but it doesn't have to be, there are tons of things to do for free but it isn't always that obvious to the naked eye. I always enjoy going to the Museum and Parks a lot, but there is way more. The Markets across London doesn't cost anything, as long as you can resist the urge of buying something, and are always worth a visit. Especially around the weekend is London full of events that you just discover by walking through the street. And the food and drinks doesn't have to cost much as well, even when you are only walking around central. The key is to talk to locals. Soho is full of people wanted to help and showing you were to satisfy your cravings.

We recently looked into budget transport options and found two things. Firstly, prices are much lower if you can book in advance; secondly, coach travel is the only real budget option for long-distance. As painful as it is.

I recently visited London and really enjoyed the experience, I stayed at a small bed & breakfast near Victoria station. It was a great location, close to Houses of Parliament, Buckingham Palace, Hyde Park etc. I wasn't sure whether it was possible to go on a budget (I've heard horror stories of how expensive it is there!), but I found a double room for 58 pounds a night, with breakfast included on this website www.london30.com. You can find a good selection of central budget accommodation, I hope you find it useful, cheers.

Hi Saul - Here's the link for the membership pricing info, I guess the student price has gone up a bit since I was there. I bought mine right at Dover Castle, but it seems you can buy them online too.

I'm a student in London for the fall. I can't seem to find a student membership offered for the English Heritage pass. How did you purchase yours?

I travelled to London with my daughter, and we stayed at St Pancras Youth Hostel. It was a great find, very nice and clean, and a yummy breakfast included in the price. They also have individual rooms but they were all booked when we made the reservation.
We visited the great London museums, which are all free and wonderful, especially the National Gallery.
We bought sadwiches and snacks for lunch at Boots, which included a drink for only 3 pounds.
There are lots of budget options in London. It´s just a question of finding them.

I stayed at university residents in London and Glasgow and found them both an affordable option for someone who is not willing to share a room with strangers anymore. Some of them allow you to use their kitchens as well, but not all. Ask in advance. Note: some universities open to visitors during the long Easter break, so you're not necessary stuck with summer trips only this way. I saw London in April and it was gorgeous! an early spring. Got to enjoy two springs that year, one in London, and one a month later in Canada.
