I've used SideStep in the past with limited success. It's an "okay" search engine tool that can pull up some pretty good deals, but as you have discovered, not so much for short-notice. The basic rule of 2+ weeks out from date of travel still applies best with this search engine, as with most. And it does usually come up with better rates than the "big boy" search engine consolidators such as Expeidia, Orbitz, Priceline, etc. However, a friend of mine introduced me to www.farecompare.com while I was seeking an affordable direct or 1-stop flight for a week in France from the U.S. Long story short, I found a 1-stop round ticket from ATL to Paris CDG for $450 +tax about three weeks out from my departure date. Every other website I'd been to, including airline's own, turned up nothing less than $600-$700 +tax. So, needless to say, at least for the time being, FareCompare.com is the one for me now! And that trip to France? Well, I'm writing to you from the City of Lights now! Bon Journee!!!

I'm not convinced any booking engine or website has all the best deals. Recent articles on Aviation.com indicate that some airlines are keeping their best rates for their own websites, and some low-cost carriers don't list their flights at all.

That being said, I think SideStep is a good tool to use for comparing prices, but it's one of so many tools...
