Great article, Eva -- Like Ian, I think your point about leaving your politics and ideas at home is particularly important. Reminded me of a bit from Don George's essay on why we travel: "Yet for me the first great joy of traveling is simply the luxury of leaving all my beliefs and certainties at home, and seeing everything I thought I knew in a different light, and from a crooked angle."

As thoughtful and aware travelers, it is not only our responsibility to respectfully set aside our beliefs. It is our pleasure. It is frightening, but we forget what is on the edge of that fear -- incredible freedom.

Great job spreading the word! I was at Angkor and it shamed me to end seeing all the people who didn't bother to dress appropriately for the religous surroundings.

[...] … or temple, or synagogue, or whatever else this holy place may be called in the part of the world you find yourself. Like museums, the big-name variety involve line-ups, crowds and admission charges – but often, the lesser-known buildings will be free, quiet, and fascinating. Religion is deeply intertwined with culture in many parts of the world, and even in largely secularized areas it is still hard to understand the history of the place without knowing a little about the history of the church. So it’s worth seeking out the local house of worship and taking a few minutes to soak it in. For tips on how to respectfully visit the world’s holy places, see my article here.
I like your point about leaving your political/philosophical differences at home. When you're a guest in another country, it's all about experiencing the culture as it is, rather than how you'd like it to be. just observing this difference can be an enlightening experience.

Great article, Eva! After going to tons of holy sites in Asia I have a new respect for how important it is to have the right info before you go.
