Hey Backpacker -

On the question of sponsored posts, and what kind of publication BNT is now and will be in the future - we're trying to become a full-fledged online magazine, with enough of an income to pay our writers, photographers and editors for their contributions. Like any magazine, we earn an income through advertising, and part of that is the occasional sponsored post. Of course, I appreciate your thoughts, and as we plan for the future, it's important to know what sort of advertising is acceptable, and what will tick readers off. We're careful to always mark sponsored posts as such - you'll never read an "ad in disguise" on BNT. But perhaps the feature slot should always be saved for real articles? Thanks for your comments, and please do keep reading and keep in touch - there is a lot of great stuff in the archives!

It depends on the type of traveler you are.

I stayed in my sister's timeshare once, and although it was lovely, I felt very tied-down. I generally like to sleep near the last sight I saw. With the timeshare, I had to return, in many cases several hours, to the same hotel.

Additionally, she and her husband bought their timeshare before starting their family. Now with four kids, the big monthly timeshare payments are a big regret for them.

Honestly, seeing this article on the front page has me wondering what kind of publication Brave New Traveler is. I was intrigued by a couple articles, but was this one sponsored? Oh, yep. All the links go to the same timeshare site. What a shame.

For all the benefits timeshares may offer, make sure you do your homework first. Beware of the bad apples of the the bunch! And make doubly sure you understand the terms of your contract.
