I highly agree that it is extremely valuable to meet local people while traveling. There are a lot of friendly people in the world. As a general statement, people that look friendly, are often friendly. You have to step out of your comfort zone sometimes and just attempt to chat to random folks. I've had many valuable conversations when I take the initiative to start talking.

I also meet local people and learn about local things through www.couchsurfing.com and sometimes these days sending out a tweet!

Getting away from the crowd can be easy as ducking down a side street or grabbing a taxi. Locals more than not are as curious about you as you are of them. Get out and explore, we do it all the time and it's the only way to ravel!

I do agree that one should try to meet local people when travelling but you do have make an effort to do this. In my travel business I encourage travellers to venture, even slightly, off the beaten track, to get a more authentic experience. If you do this you can avoid the tourist hordes and get better value for money. There's also more opportunity to meet locals if your destination isn't packed with tourists and a vast array of guided tours. I always look for restaurants which are popular with locals to sample some local fayre at a realistic price.
