It's a common dilemma among tourists spending more in another place when you could actually enjoy the vacation destination if viewed from a local perspective.

Thanks for the kudos, everyone!

Chris, I completely agree (as an ex-expat) that many other countries have proven how easy it is to reduce waste without jumping ship for a commune. Now if only it was as easy to ride a bicycle in LA as it is in Amsterdam.

Max, it's funny how many things we can do to reduce our carbon footprint are things that aren't travel-specific. Yet people can so quickly forget those things as soon as they go on vacation.

(And, as an aviophobe, I always prefer ground transportation to flying...that's how I moved from NY to California.)

Your article has been ringing in my head for several weeks now. Budget travelers/backpackers are at pains to distance themselves from big-budget tourists: just as tourists seek to bring their home lifestyle with them wherever they go, backpackers strive for authentic local experiences wherever they go. Thus, since nearly every other country in the world isn't as wasteful as the US, "doing as Romans do" means you're inherently reducing your footprint. Yet another reason to skip package tours and backpack, I guess.

But why stop at traveling? Everyone should assess their carbon footprint at home. www.earthday.net/footprint
and climatecrisis.org are two quick sites that will tell you where you rank at home -a big budget tourist or an earth-conscious backpacker.

Good article. The one big thing you can do to reduce your footprint is to not fly and that will always dwarf any other savings you may make. I'm starting a low carbon travel company to make that easier. If you'd liket to read about our progress before we launch next year, then please subscribe to my blog at http://loco2travel.blogspot.com. Please don't hesitate to get in touch if you want to know more about our plans or if you'd like me to write a guest blog post.
