Great advice! I will attest to the wonders of having someone watch the bags while you run down a bus/bargain with a cab/find a Western Union.

I think that it's important to note that, whatever tips you use, traveling with a partner will push everything in the relationship to the limit. The smallest crack will bring the whole thing crashing down if a relationship isn't able to handle it.

I've seen a quite a few divorces and breakups that were catalysed by "that big adventure" (or the lack thereof). It awakens a spirit in people and--if that spirit is at odds--there's little you can do about it.

Theresa,
Thanks for the great suggestions! I always feel so guilty when I ditch my husband, even though I've literally been doing it since our honeymoon (when he insisted on spending 5 hours studying Greek each day!) and it was great to get 'permission' from your article. I also love the idea of coming up with personal lists and then comparing them to come up with your next place to travel. I'll enjoy reading you and your husband's trip around the world blog over the next year.

Another suggestion? It's not always necessary to take your significant other. When I first got married I thought I always had to convince him to come on my crazy schemes with me. Turns out it's just as handy to leave him to take care of the animals while I go off and run a marathon or something in a far part of the world.

Happy Travels!
