I lived in Chongqing from 2000 - 2001 and i FEEL you and just to keep up the gushy positivity: excellent article. Wonderful descriptions, great metaphors and linked by a theme of depth. I am Jack's brown smelly nose. Filled with black boogers from CQ's warm embrace ... hehehe

You're such a rock star. It's nice to know that there are people who actually enjoy my long-winded rambles...haha. I'll take that tip on the book.

Great article! Very interested in Soja's book...

I agree, there's a vast difference between definition and meaning. The level where people come together is definition ("pants is pants"), but things also have unique meaning for people. That's why some would ask, "Why would anyone want to go to X and do Y?" and others respond, "Because I felt Z."

That Z element is the fuel of travel, punk rock and DIY. It goes beyond the monochrome and into the color that you're talking about. It's "the inner journey through the outer world."

For all the "real" science and technology we have, they're all at the disposal of the "unreal" - the personal directions that give our lives meaning. (You really must find Martin Buber's work on I/It and I/Thou!)

I love reading stuff from people who are really living it - the ones who're deep in the pulse of it all. Keep on doing, Emily. I'm envious.
