OK. Color me a semi-traditionalist. I prefer to buy something that the couple will have and be able to remember us when they look at it or use it. Other than very young couples who want/need to set up housekeeping, I don't give household goods. When it's an older couple who already have all the kitchen and tableware stuff they need, I try to find a distinctive piece or artwork or a fine craftwork (art glass being my current favoite). When it's a younger couple who have been housekeeping together or separately but "student-style," I look at the registry to get an idea of their taste and usually try to find something harmonious. My husband would just as soon get the couple a gift certificate. We went to a wedding a couple of years ago where there was a regular registry and also the opportunity to contibute to their honeymoon fund. Frankly, the traditionalist part of me didn't care for the concept -- though I've been to numerous Italian weddings where the bride walks around the reception with a white silk purse for monetary donations. Some couples use them to pay off the wedding; others for the honeymoon.

Great article! I agree that this sort of gift can be a lot more meaningful than a monogrammed napkin ring!
