Tip: invest in this little puppy (or should I say monkey ;) ): http://www.joby.com/products/gorillapod/

Then find the self-timer on your camera and make pictures using that. It prevents you from shaking the camera when you press the shutter and your pictures will be much sharper. This of course also works without that gorillapod, but it sure makes things easier :) Now I wish I hadn't lost mine somewhere in Poland :)

Also: I don't know about other brands, but my Casio Exilim camera has a preset for night shots. Using that and aforementioned technique you can make beautiful pictures. Here are two examples:

Thanks everyone. I carry a point and shoot digital nowadays, but sometimes I will lug along a Funsaver as a backup.

Good luck!

Relating back to one of your earlier articles 'The Art of Non-Invasive Street Photography', I find a basic camera the absolute must when traveling. I like to consider myself a traveler, and am often very self conscious about distinguishing myself from the run of the mill 'tourist'. Being smaller and less conspicuous, a small ordinary camera allows me to capture those memorable places and moments in a low key way.
