I fully agree with Theresa, do the traveling BEFORE the engagement! Before my engagement, my now-wife and I traveled three months in a campervan in Europe...now that's a tight space! Needless to say we later got engaged after knowing we can handle being around each other like that...after our wedding we left Canada, traveled around Europe for five months again in a campervan, trained across Russia/Mongolia/China and spent a month in Vietnam before settling in Melbourne...we are still together...a strong testament to our relationship!

I found the article to be applicable to many of my best and worst travel experiences. My ex-fiance and I traveled to Botswana to taste the fine cuisine (soft shell turtle, peppered teriaki iguanas, deep fried peacocks, etc...). I was enjoying myself thoroughly when she began to bring up the budget that we had never set up, or at least I had not realized she had set up using her own secret microsoft money operation. Since we were only finishing day 3 of our 6 day vacation, this was already a serious problem. Not only was I angry that she had not consulted me about the money issue before we left; She was also steamed about the expenses that we were incurring at a exponential rate. From then on we budgeted our money to a tee, but the trip had lost its luster and we no longer had that unique first trip feeling that we had shared for those first few days. If we had just worked together before leaving, we could have managed the situation so much better we did and could have splurged on that delectable hind elephant we were both dying for on day 6. I would definitely agree that proper preparation is necessary even if it is tedious, it can be the difference between and ex fiance and a fiance!

"Sometimes giving up autonomous control of decision making is the hardest part of getting married."

No kidding! But that is the price guys have to pay, because you can bet the women are going to give up "autonomous control", so someone has to. :)

I highly, highly recommend traveling together long before you get to the engagement stage. It's a whole lot easier to break up before there's a ring on the finger! I think Mark Twain had it right when he said, "I have found out there ain't no surer way to find out whether you like people or hate them than to travel with them."

Daniel--Out of college, I taught English in Greece. A fellow ex-pat who had been teaching there for many years, introduced me to a similar line of thinking when I first complained about the chaotic state in which we generally found ourselves. She said: "Every day is an adventure; crazy shit will happen." And it did. And, so long as the mind set was right, it was an adventure.

My wife and I have a phrase that helps us get our perspective back when things start getting stressful: "Every day's an adventure." It helps to not only look at things with a grin, but we use it when every so often I forget to do the dishes, or she forgets her purse back at the restaurant... it's like an instant steam-release valve.

Incidentally, we learned the phrase in Taiwan, where 3 years with your fiancee is like 3 reincarnations with the same mate.

Great advice and practical tips! One tool my husband and I used when we first traveled together before getting married was <a>"My Day, Your Day."</a> We alternated days so that we shared the responsibility of tasks that neither of us particularly enjoyed, so that the burden didn't fall only on one person.

Almost eight years later we're still traveling together...this time around the world. When the travel to do list starts to overwhelm us, we return to My Day, Your Day.

Great post and great tips!

As an aside, though, I think those tips are applicable to any kind of travel, not just the 'real' variety, and to life in general.
