I stand guilty of all 7 mistakes, but mostly, too little research and checking facebook. Before my next trip, research will occupy every free moment prior take off and while traveling I will not duck into each overpriced internet bar that I pass to see if hoosydingy left a comment on MY page.

I've done all of these things and it all ended up okay.... traveler instincts deeply impedded in my spirit unconsciously had the back-up plans in place you lined out Tim. Nothing worse than looking for an ATM in a sapphire mining town in Madagascar in order to pay the driver a proper tip and keep up with the snooty French couple from Paris I was sharing the ride with. Still cringe a bit at that one.

Oh, we all cringe, upon remembering how we first crawled like new puppies with our eyes half-shut, to some foriegn grotto! Well done Tim. You had me giggling about how I left Canada the first time with only fifty bucks and what a small disaster that proved to be. Borrowing people's peanut butter is no fun...

Great comment, Cedric - especially liked this thought:

"If you are just on a short vacation, then it is not a good idea to run out of money, as it would spoil the trip. If you are on a long journey, worrying about money will also spoil it for you. Trust me on this, you will find a way out."

Getting stuck without money is not as bad as you think. It has happened to me on three occasions, the first time was unintentional. The last two times, I couldnt give a hoot. It really made for interesting travels, and I must ad that some of my most memorable travel experiences stems from this. You would be amazed at how recourcefull you can get in situations like this. It meant an extended trip, as I had no money to get home, so I relied on work along the way, and I also took some travellers on board my Land Rover, and they paid for petrol, beers and food. I took them where they wanted to go, and in the process I got to see some interesting places as well. I have met other travellers in the same boat, and they all had some interesting stories to tell. Most of it ended in a good way, and all of them are still alive and well. Some are still on the road... If you are just on a short vacation, then it is not a good idea to run out of money, as it would spoil the trip. If you are on a long journey, worrying about money will also spoil it for you. Trust me on this, you will find a way out. I have on three occasions, and so have numerous travellers I have encountered along the way. Try it, You will be surprised at how much fun it is, once you are removed from the shackles that is cash...
If you do get in to shit, dont sue me...I have no money!
