Swimming works great too... well, if you've got a safe body of water, that is.

Running is a great idea-- I also try to do some yoga every morning.

Hey Justin -

Hash running is definitely a good way to meet people abroad, but I wouldn't exactly mark it down as a way to stay in shape, as the runners usually down as much alcohol as they can before sprinting off; that was my experience, anyway. The group in Kagoshima, Japan only met once every two months.

A great way to combine running and meeting locals while traveling is Hash Running ("hash" refers to trail markings in this case, not drugs). The Hash House Harriers is an international / world-wide running group located in just about every major city in 178 countries. Almost all groups welcome visitors, include expat members who speak English, and will be more fun than you can handle. I recently ran in 5 different hashes in Lao, Cambodia, and Malaysia and had excellent experiences each time.

Read up about the concept here:
http://www.worldhhh.com/

And find a hash group near you, where ever you may be in the world, here:

Great tips.
I find that having a fitness routine that you can do anywhere regardless of space and equipment available is a great way to add a healthy ritual to your day when travelling.
I like to do some yoga postures, squats, use the bed to do tricep dips etc.

You forgot to mention yoga.....yoga is one of the best ways to get a workout without any equipment. Not to mention that it keeps your mind in balance as well as your body.

Thanks for these tips--very helpful! I find that lugging my backpack from hotel to hotel in search of the cheapest room is sometimes the only exercise I get on the road. And while that does wonders for my shoulders, the rest of me needs a little nudging.

In the “Sample Local Flavor” category, I have had fun trying out the local popular dances while traveling through Latin America. If you are in a mid-sized city, it is easy to find a place to try out some rumba, samba, salsa, mambo, or merengue.

It won't bulk you up, but you can burn a lot of calories.
