Interesting response and dialogue going on here. I'd have to agree with Eva's first comment that the article does show the "vagabond" as a Messianic-type figure. While the life vision of some may be to stay a traveling vagabond, many others would not find this existence fulfilling.

"The vagabond traveler represents a higher kind of responsibility – one who is more in touch with reality and the true nature of the Universe," - with this I'd have to disagree. Just because you have aspirations and career goals does not mean you are out of touch. In fact, I'd consider someone running a refugee camp, a teacher training literacy workers, an engineer helping build wells or dams to increase safe driving water supply in a village, or someone running a safe house for trafficked women to be really representing a "higher kind of responsibility."

Agreed.
As I was reading this, I couldn't help but agree in the empty notion of conventional success- I am a student of mathematics and physics, neither of which can differentiate between such a successful system and any other system without being assigned an arbitrary metric with which to measure value.

The problem arises when a "vagabond" attaches some sort of moral superiority to his eccentric lifestyle-NO! The same logic that leads to a refutation of "making something out of yourself" should reject any other systematic system of the "good" life. It is not morally superior to go find yourself.

Its just another path, another arbitrary path.

which you decide is up to you, but the emptiness of one does not imply the fullness of the other.

Wow... what a discussion, what a topic. I've travelled all my life, still doing it. But no money right now, so I'm exploring options for getting back on the road, and this whole discussion is getting me moving with a bit more enthusiasm. It reminds me of how easy it is to get stuck in the rut of thinking I can't do anything. It's a habit, nothing more.
But, while it is a habit of me, for the majority of humanity, a life of work, family, career, survival and 'success' or whatever, is the norm. And who am I to critisise them for that? Without the factories, the businesses (like the people who build the computers and phones we use to communicate, the camere we use to record our journeys, clothes, planes, trains, passports, money..whatever!) I couldn't be the traveller I've always been, and always will be.
In my experience (and I've had a lot of it, beleive me) there are VERY VERY few travellers who are on the road (as in being nomadic) forever. Most are on summer vacations, a one year 'gap year' type trip, or they've taken long service leave from their careers, retired or something else. So, very few will work and then travel, work some more then travel again, on and on. Even people who groove on Matador fit into all kinds of travelling categories. Only a small number of them will be able or willing to travel as their long term lifestyle.
And isn't that a good thing?

Thanks for a great article.

Questioning conventional "success" is always a wonderful thing to do. It lets us take the road less travelled. In my my 48 years of life following that question has taken me to a life in five countries so I think I qualify.

The great news is that we live in a time where science provides us with real answers about what success means. Just expand your time and space context to included the whole universe and it's clear we live in an evolving universe that seems driven to become ever more complex and ever more (may I say) beautiful.
So the answer to the question of "success" is simply whether we are giving all that we have to develop. Because if we truly push our own boundaries then we also push the boundaries of what's possible for the universe, as expressed in human form.

WDYT?
Best.......

Thank you Thank you Thank you for this article. This is the struggle I find myself in now...the "what will people think" if I drop most or all of the external trappings of so-called happiness for the chance at internal happiness. To travel, to explore, to see what's out there....these are the things I crave. This does not mean my past years as an office worker dragged down by politics and personalities have been wasted. It taught me what I don't want and to follow my inner aspirations vs societal norms.

That was a rad article, I almost can't believe it, as just this morning, I made a post on my own blog talking about so much that you mention here! So much so, that I'm going to add a post above it now, linking everyone to this article, to help clarify just what i was trying to say!
Nice one, thanks!
