Well, you're wrong because thousands of people joined the ranks years later and I'm one of them.

John lennon was hardly an ordinary person. Not that I disagree with the people on the list, but it would have been cool to see a list made up entirely non celebrities such as Watada.

"And that’s sad, because you’ll never get your head around why, in the end, people who live for war are forgotten, while men who die for peace - like John Lennon - are remembered."

Well SAID!!!

I disagree with Ben too, but for a different reason.

Ben, it'll be hard for you to understand this, but war's neither a necessary part of life, nor is courage necessarily about meeting enemies with a weapon.

It never ceases to amaze me how many Americans insist war is inevitable because they've never lived in a country-turned-crater. In your narrow view, Ben, war's just peachy because it happens in someone else's home. America's been at war, but our vets go home to a place safely removed from it. (Before you claim our relative safety's due to our superior armed forces, I have one word for you: Switzerland.)

But you - you're smug on the side that stockpiles safety. You accept the 10 o'clock news as being someone else's kid, someone else's problem, and shake your head and feign sadness at cruel Darwin when you turn off the TV. In your view it's every man for himself, might makes right, and the only good enemy is dead, dead, dead. And I really pity you for it, because you'll spend the rest of your life barricading the door against your own paranoia - just you in a perpetual bunker of fear.

You miss the point when you said John and Yoko failed to end war. They succeeded in reminding us we don't have to see war as inevitable - we can say no to it, like I do to your narrow view. They succeeded in showing that the only way out of your bunker is to see with better eyes - and Ben, I wouldn't wish your eyes on my worst enemy.

You may never understand the courage exemplified by the people in this list. You probably consider them weak because they don't have guns and don't condone violence. And that's sad, because you'll never get your head around why, in the end, people who live for war are forgotten, while men who die for peace - like John Lennon - are remembered.

Peace.

@Ben Wilson

War and Peace balance each other? did that actually make sense in your head before you wrote it? That is the most ridiculous thing I have heard of in awhile - and StumbleUpon makes sure there are no shortage of ridiculous things for me to hear of

The majority of wars are based on religious or racial(cultural) motivation. Be it The wars in the middle east , or genocide in africa , they are based on the idea that your people are superior to those people over there.

I, personally, do not believe I am inherently superior to anyone else, let a lone a group of people arbitrarily classified in one way or another.

can you imagine a time , even a million years from now - that "humans" (whatever "we" are by then) are not so consumed by religious fervor or their own ego - that they no longer need to end another person's life , to make their point?

Now I'm not sure that there will ever be a time (where we still exist) and no longer have anyone , eevr , end another person's life. that may be part of us. BUT - you said war. war is different. war is not part of us , it is a byproduct of ridiculous notions that can be given up - if education is applied properly.

I agree with those who say Watada shouldn't be on the list. The man knew he'd have to go to war when he signed up. It's far more courageous to go off to war than it is to protest something you signed up for, especially at a time when it was politically expedient to protest the war.

I like most of the rest of this list, but at least half of these are not "ordinary people," not by any stretch of the imagination. Sure, they all once were, but so was Obama at one point. Hard to call him one now.

What did John Lennon ever achieve? His most powerful message was that peace will only come if we "be peace." If we act peace. It will never come through violence or struggle. That is an enormously important realization. We're still grappling with it today.
