In 1997, I worked in Muscat and Sohar in connection with the Teachers College. I agree with your article. i found the Omani people to be among the finest i have ever known. It was a wonderful experience.

Thanks for this blog post on a very important topic.
I was born in Barbados but grew up mostly in Canada (with 3 years in the US). Although the majority of my family are (ahem) "Christians", I have a problem with practicing a religion (Christianity) that is so mired in VIOLENCE and that even justified slavery of Afrocoid people like myself.
Heck, I've been exploring Kenya for the past 4 years and I'm shocked that peeps down here -- in Black Sub Saharan Africa for heaven's sakes! -- worship a blond haired, blue eyed Jesus. At least they should worship someone who actually LOOKS like them. It's better for the psyche -- especially the kids. Ya think?

And honestly, when you read the bible...God telling his followers to slay this group of people over here and that group over there is sooo um, unholy. The irony. :-)
My point is that The West's hands aren't clean either. This Muslim fear is all about OIL. Excuses are needed to extract the Muslim world's black gold, so terrorism fits the bill -- perfectly. Any logical person can see that. No?

Quite frankly, I would like, for once, to be left ALONE from religious influences. Let me find my OWN WAY, thank you very much. I believe lots of people around the world share this particular view. Although Islam is not my cup of tea, I find it more authentic (illegal to charge interest in banking, etc.) than Catholicism, which hijacked Paganism's popularity back then. I'm not going to get started down thaat road though. Not here! lol. :-)

Now, reading this post about your Oman experience, I wonder if religion would be where it is around the world had children been given a CHOICE to attend church, synagogue, or mosque. I'm sure the "adults" would be terrified with the outcome if this were the case. And that's my point: Children don't have any choice at all. So the cycle continues into perpetuity -- until some break free from the obligation to Mother's and Father's customs. For me, House music, traveling, Mother Nature, and Peace are my religion of choice. :-)

Cheers!

Interesting article. I love this exercise you did analyzing haram, makruh, and hilal...what a great opportunity for the students to practice critical thinking. I visited Oman last year and spent some time with students at the University in Muscat. I met many wonderful people, and the conversations you had with the students seemed similar to many of my exchanges. I organized an on-line exchange project with Omani students and students in Portland OR, which you can see here: http://www.worldlybelongings.com/

Loved your article. Im also working in Oman. Muscat. I love it and I am also faced with my family and friends back home thinking i am nuts for living here. Omani ppl are kind and open hearted. They are so not the Mean people that media in the west makes them out to be. I wish anyone who can to visit Oman. You will be welcomed with open arms and see for yourself the kindness Muslims have.
