Hi Tim,

I am glad to read your article about us. I am from Burma, kachin state belong to Jing hpaw group but recently in Bagalore, India, studying Master of Theology in New Testament. We need a person like you who can make our situations such as our stand, dignity,faith known to the world. Keep it up Tim. Do something for the needy people while living is better than die for nothing. What do you say?

The Kachins just rejected an ultimatum from the Myanmar military government, and have refused to transform their army into a border guard force.

The junta is mounting a major offensive to the south, in Karen State, driving thousands of refugees across the border to Thailand.

My thoughts and prayers are with them.

I really enjoyed your piece about Christmas in Kachin State. I have had students from 13 different ethnic groups from Burma. I have just come back from teaching/living with two Kachin women for six months. I thought your piece beautifully described their religious faith. Also, good to know is that the missionary who came to Kachin State created a written Kachin language, which has proven important to keeping Kachin culture alive under the current regime. I had very negative views on missionary work (still do a little) but I was given a different perspective after living with the women. Thank you for your piece, you captured it all wonderfully and accurately.

Thanks Brandon! Myanmar is indeed a fascinating place. The Pulitzer Center is a really cool organization that funds international journalism projects in parts of the world that don't get much coverage. We'll be syndicating content through them as well as freelancing – basically placing content anywhere people will publish!

Tim, This is a great piece. I really enjoyed reading it. I was in myanmar a few years ago, before Nargis. The country continues to fascinate me. I was wondering if you could answer a question for me… I see you are in Myanmar with a Pulitzer grant… Are you reporting for a specific news agency/paper as a correspondent/stringer or are you self-reporting for a book, freelancing, etc…? Religion is hard to grasp at times but our spirtual nature is always here waiting on us to approach. We have to make a comprehensive decision to accept spirtual contact with God in order to feel that faith is relevant. Thanks Tim for a wonderful post and timely as we beginning to celebrate Christ birth.

Thanks so much for sharing this experience with us, Tim. Your writing is always so clear and approachable. I admit to belonging to the camp of Christianity's detractors, but you certainly make a solid point that it's easy to deride faith when you don't know what it's like to need it.
