I loved the book getting stoned with savages. I laughed out loud a lot. I live and work in Yosemite National park as a shuttle bus driver. Gets real quiet here in Winter and I like to real fun books that make me smile. If ever Mr. and Mrs. Troost and family ever visit Yosemite, please be sure to look me up. I would like to meet the author and share some laughs about it if possible. Yosemite is very beautiful right now . Take care and thanks for the entertainment!

More books to add to the "to read" list! Thanks for the post...having traveled 6 weeks in China last year, I am very interested in reading this latest book. The spitting is one thing I just couldn't get past. It's one thing out in the open in the streets, quite another in the confines of a crowded bus or on a train (on some trains there are clear signs, with illustatration, saying "No Spitting" - of course this doesn't stop them though). On sleeper trains it's something else to hear the chorus of hacking and spitting into the communal sinks, which are open to the rest of the cart, starting around 7 AM or so...always travel with earplugs!

Yes, I know they think that we're disgusting, blowing our noses into a kleenex and stuffing it in our pockets. But at least we just toss it in the garbage later and don't have to subject others to our phlegm. It's a matter of spreading germs for me (although I will never get over that noise, I shudder just to think about it). On that note, I think our culture should ban the handshake too! :)

Oh man, I had now idea I opened a can of plegm-globbers with the spit question. Vagaz - definitely get this one. Also, as it turns out, he seems to be a pretty great guy. Not many people take the take to reply to interviews as thoroughly as he did. And if you've never read "Sex Lives..." that is a great one to take on a plane.

Hmmm, maybe no jail time for spitting, but I do remember the penalty for driving in the "olympic-only" lane around the city: two years' imprisonment.

I lived in Beijing all of last year, and yes, they did impose a spitting fine in the months before the Olympics, but I'm not sure about the jail part. It definitely wouldn't surprise me. I can say that the "enormous globs of phlegm" description is pretty much dead on, and there was, in my experience, absolutely no change in the number of phlegmballs flying prior to the Olympics. I left in late June, though, so maybe in July people suddenly decided to...swallow. I do remember being on a train that had fantastically translated signs that read, "Don't Spit Everywhere!"

It's amazing how quickly everything is moving to digital. In many ways it's great especially with film and music. I'd like to think books will be available in both formats though. There is something about thumbing through a book or wandering down the travel section of the book stores that's special.

You can be fined for spitting in Hong Kong. Or feeding the pigeons.

The Sex Lives of Cannibals is on my list to buy before I depart, but I'm curious about the spitting in China - apparently they made it a crime to spit in Beijing in preparation for the olympics... you could be fined or sent to jail... for spitting. Anyone heard about this?
