Nice story about the place and culture that I escaped from. It was interesting to read your article about the place that I have much negative association with up until today. I thought ninja boots were for bicycle taxi men and workers alike them (what do I know about mainland people?). This is great. Keep me posted for more upcoming work!

I remembering having a similar feeling about light and gravity in China–I'd traveled a lot in the Western hemisphere, but the first day I spent in Beijing felt like landing on another planet. The feeling of the air and the smells and the way people carried themselves…completely, totally, different.

Nicely captured Adam, but I have to question your metaphor – why not the Legend of Zelda? The triforce symbol in the Shinto shrines, the giant spiders… it all fits.

There's definitely something comforting is being one with the masses in Japan, yet still being the stake that stands out as a foreigner. It's part of the reason I left.

Wow. You've totally nailed the first-timer's Tokyo experience (as well as the mindset of someone from the old-school video game generation!). I can't believe you mentioned the crows. I also found Tokyo crows to be the scariest birds I'd ever seen. They sounded as if they were cawing my name.

Interesting post, Adam. Japan is a fascinating country. The culture is so unique in comparison to their neighbors in so many ways. That being said, they still keep their regional nature. It's almost a combination of West and East .

Very nice article. Makes me want to explore Japan — again!

I, too, found Tokyo to be one of the only cities that made sense, and felt to me completely comfortable. It also, oddly, seemed the very quietest city (certainly big city) that I'd ever been in.
