Pretty soon you'll probably be able to visit most places in Second Life - which is a step up from virtual traveling in various video games...

Nice post. Besides Wikipedia, another way to fuel your virtual travels is to read some great fiction about faraway places. National Geographic Traveler has compiled the Ultimate Travel Library, with a focus on books with a tangible sense of place, and it's organized by geographic region: http://traveler.nationalgeographic.com/travel-boo...
We add to it every month with Don George's Trip Lit book reviews of new books "that transport us": http://traveler.nationalgeographic.com/2008/12/tr...

Thanks Erik.

Yes, Second Life looks exciting Ian. I went on when it first came out with the idea of creating a greenygrey character/environment, but didn't take it very far when I realised there was an allocated choice of names and places. It's probably evolved since then, so might give it another look in the future.

Great article and very nicely written! I find that my "virtual visits" allow me to speak with other travelers about their experiences and have an idea of places and things they are talking about, even if I haven't been there myself.

It's cool to see "virtual travel" get some good descriptions! Thanks!

Thanks Eva. Good to hear from a virtual travel kindred spirit, and thanks for the warning about Canada's little big provinces!

My mom and I used to pore over the atlas for hours, memorizing place names and planning imaginary trips when I was a kid! And come to think of it, I still make a habit of google mapping and reading guidebook entries for places I have no immediate plans to visit today, too. Thanks for articulating that urge!

ps: Don't let Nova Scotia or Newfoundland catch you calling 'em Canada's small provinces... They're "walk small and carry a big fun stick" kinds of places. :D
