I am a huge Haruki Murakami fan and his short stories, mostly based in Tokyo, capture in a somewhat quieter and more melancholy way the surreal cultural mix you describe here. Your description of being an alien, and how this can be one of the most rewarding joys of traveling, is spot on. I remember being completely blown away in my first day in Beijing--I'd never been to Asia before and felt as thought I'd landed on a totally different planet.
