Great idea. Jet travel is so quick, but what do you miss in the process. The journey should be just as interesting as the final destination, hopefully, if you're lucky.

Nice article. I think all forms of travel have benefits. In general, I'd rather travel across land on the ground, but prefer to fly if it's across vast oceans.

I love train travel–I am a hopeless romantic about trains. But I think buses actually let you see more, and they're a more physical experience. Maybe it's all the jostling and jolting over mountains I did in South America, and the fact that people were always hopping on and off selling something random (olive-raisin tamales? sugar cane?) Also, buses seem somewhat more random, chaotic, and local than trains. Then again, I guess it depends on where. In China the trains are the way to go.

So is the train the happy medium? (Especially with some sort of pass that enables you to hop on hop off) You get to see the landscapes, plus don't miss everything in between. Not having done any extensive train travel myself, I'll have to defer to someone else to comment….

The changes crossing borders are definitely fascinating. Sometimes they're drastic–like crossing from China into Hong Kong, or the U.S to Mexico, and they reveal these huge differences between places that seem so close. Then sometimes you wonder, hmm, what really changed? I felt that way in Argentina and Chile.

I think you're right, there's something about being close to the ground–and about actually watching the landscapes change in front of you. Plus, as far as road trips are concerned, you get to go through places you would never get to in a plane (like West Texas, where I found candy in the gas stations that I hadn't seen since I was a kid in the 1980's.)

This was a great article. It's true that people "back in the day" did not travel by airplane. They traveled on foot, horse and buggy (carriage), ships, and trains. When the automobile was born, people took road trips. I enjoy plane travel because of the time it takes to get somewhere. I think I would like to travel by train. There may be something nostalgic about it.
