Really enjoyed this interview! I love the take away point:

"My own take-away is to not understand ANYTHING too quickly."

And I would love to see more voices from the military on Matador.

Thanks for your comments, Sarah and Hal. David's book is an excellent analysis of border issues because, as I mention in the interview, he breaks out of the bipolar conversation that has trapped both sides for so long, making it impossible for us to really understand concerns about the border--much less do anything about them. Sarah, I'd be happy to send you my copy of the book if you'd like to read it.

Wow, Julie, excellent interview. I need to get my hands on this book. The border situation is out of control, what with the recent shootouts in Chihuahua and the rate of assassinations in Juarez...I think it is something both the U.S and Mexico should be worried about and I think, as David Danelo said, that this is a concern that goes beyond the political debates about immigration. Instead of focusing so much on arming Mexico (both the legal forces and the cartels) the U.S should be focusing on helping to repair the corrupt institutions down here.
