As Theroux wrote in the Old Patagonian Express, each time we move on we are leaving a little bit of ourselves and lives, and therefore getting closer to the end.

I recommend making the most of each segment of your life, and saying goodbye to it when you leave it.

I’ve definitely experienced that sense of loss when returning from a place. New locations can do an amazing job chilling you out and helping you get your shit right, so to speak. Your extended metaphor/literary analogy expressed that well, Frank! Well done, sir!

Fantastic article — absolutely relatable on many levels. I have never considered reading Gulliver’s Travels but I might have to now!

While I have the same problem and no real solution, the best I can say try to catch yourself falling into old habits. Now that we are aware of our growth abroad, if we keep reminding ourselves of that pride when we are home, maybe it will change.

Very interesting point of view. And a very well encouraging too. I am facing quite a few of those worries as am will undertake a solo trip round the world.
Perhaps each situation makes us adapt to it, prob not how we want it to be, but for our own conservation or laziness?

Frank. I got to say, the philosophical insight proved to be valuable. I thought about my own experiences while reading this piece. I did the same with parallel energy and motivation. Something about traveling that pushes something out.
