I have just walked the pilgrimage from St. Jean Pied de Port to Santiago with my videocamera in hand. The aim was not only to reach Santiago, but also to make a documentary about the pilgrimage.

Before leaving I had a focus upon that of change, and my idea was to first get to know and follow a few pilgrims on the road, and then secondly go to meet them again some time after finishing the pilgrimage, now asking them of how the pilgrimage had influenced their life. Had they changed?

The documentary is now finished and is called: "In Between - Walking the Pilgrimage to Santiago".

I've followed four pilgrims from different places, with different ages and sexes, and I believe it has become a quite interesting film about not only the road itself, but about how such a journey affects ones life.

The film is available on DVD and Streaming, both on www.amazon.com and at my own homepage www.caminosantiago.no.

I particularly like the emphasis on a world of change. I am inspired by the young people who make this journey. In spite of all the efforts of this appalling society we live in to make people dependent on bought experiences, young people continue to look for their own path!

Thank you so much, John. This is indeed a beautiful piece to read while preparing for my first camino in September. It gives me plenty of food for thought. Rita

John, we have emailed sporadically over the years, and I have used your guides with pleasure, finding them extremely useful while walking through Portugal and Spain. However, our journey on the Camino has turned us into obsessive long distance walkers.

At this point, several thousand miles later, I think that what I felt on the Camino de Santiago is not unique to that journey. I feel that there is a community of spirit among long distance hikers, a peace brought by the simplicity of that life, and a common goal, that binds us all together.

My name is Santiago, and so I've wanted to do the Camino ever since I heard of its existence. I just returned from Spain less than a month ago, having finished my walk on June 15th. I could not have said it better myself if I tried. The Camino has been probably the best trip I have ever done in my life. Reading this article made me want to pack my backpack and go back to do it again!
Although it can be made on a bicycle, I would highly recommend that it be done on foot. I noticed from the bikers I talked to that their experience, while no doubt a fun one, was simply a different one. I think that in order to truly understand the feeling this article is trying to convey, you have to walk it- feel the blisters, feel the knee, joint, and muscle pains, force yourself those extra 4 km to the next town, and eventually wind up spending 20 euro from your food budget on a set of tracking poles because the stick you picked up on the road simply doesn't do the trick anymore.
It's all part of the experience, and I highly recommend it!
Great article!

Great piece John.

I cycled the Camino in 2006, it took two weeks. With cycling, you tend to forget its purpose and it becomes a race to the finish. I intend to set aside enough time and walk it.

Great piece! I'm actually reading Paulo Coelho's book about walking the Camino de Santiago, "O Diaro de um Mago". It's really interesting, wish I could see it for myself.
