I fly about 47 weeks per year, (in fact I’m sitting on the floor at Chicago O’Hare right now as I type this,) so I see a lot. The most heartrending was in San Diego, when a young lady (early 20s) had fallen asleep at the gate and missed her flight. I’d seen this before, but this girl was hysterical. Less angry at someone else–more phenomenally pissed at herself, but absolutely wailing in grief.
Usually people get mad at the airline staff. Miss their flight-get mad; flight delayed-get mad; lost their boarding pass-get mad. Sometimes I wanna turn around and say to one of them, “Y’know, you’re right. The left wing is hanging in chards and Hurricane Stanislav is coming up the runway, but this delay is simply unacceptable! I say let’s take off anyway!”
