Wow, Christine, what a great article!! I’m doing my low-residency MFA through Chatham University, inPittsburgh, and had no idea about the safe zone. You are absolutely spot on in the observation that we can’t assume change happens overnight, or even in ovious ways. Thanks for both opening my eyes to this awesome refuge for writers, and reminding me once again to keep hope alive as 2010 approaches!!

I recently made a decision that will result in the biggest change in my life ever. It is disappointing some important people in my life and I have moments of sheer panic about how it is all going to turn out. But I realize that I need to start working towards achieving a sense of fulfillment and happiness in life and am hoping that this change will be the start of it all.

I want to change my perspective. I had the same misgivings about the Obama-messiah complex we displayed as a nation. If we don’t change ourselves from the inside out then our leaders cannot work policy for a greater good. Ultimately we get what we deserve, what we tolerate or what we are willing (or not willing) to fight for.

I like the saying “There are no wrong actions, only wrong perceptions.”

Paired with “The only thing constant is change.” I get a mantra for the first moments of 2010.

I will only be able to turn over a few more decades…what can I change about myself, my perception of the world this day…this decade?
